About This Course:

One of the most feared terrorism attacks is one which utilizes poisons or other toxic substances. These attacks may not be immediately obvious, which can cause proper response to be difficult.

Individual attacks using poison to injury or kill targets have been discussed in the news and are one of the most utilized forms of murder.

This course will go into the various forms of poisons and toxic substances, how they are often created using very common household or industrial products, and how they can be released in an attack.

Further, students will learn common forms of accidental poisonings around the home or place of work, and how to identify potential problematic mixtures.

Proper protective gear and response once the attack has been recognized will be demonstrated.

  • Principles of Ingestion, Inhalation, Absorption, and Injection
  • Poison Statistics
  • Common Poisons and Prevention
  • Use of Poisons and Toxins in Terrorism
  • Nerve Agents, Choking Agents, Vesicants
  • Commonly Available Pre-Cursor Chemicals to Manufacture Poisons
  • Medical Toxicology
  • Recognizing a Poison or Toxin Attack
  • Medical Response Techniques for the First-Responder
  • Review of Available Personal Protection Equipment Including Masks

Prerequisites:

None, although those who have taken the IED class will have a better understanding of certain delivery methods.

This is a classroom course with a lab / hands-on aspect.
