About This Course:
Practical Protection Hiding in Plain Sight
About This Course
One day, you may need a cane for support.
Today, you can carry one for protection.
For most of history, a walking stick symbolized preparedness, status, and capability—not weakness. In modern times, it has quietly become one of the most practical and legally permissible personal defense tools available. In many environments where firearms or pepper spray are prohibited or impractical, a simple cane remains entirely acceptable. It is a formidable tool hiding in plain sight.
This one-day, hands-on training (10:00am–5:00pm) teaches you how to use a cane or walking stick effectively for personal protection. Whether you carry one for mobility, for preparedness, or simply as a low-profile defensive option, you will learn practical, adaptable techniques that work in real-world situations.
Drawing from systems such as traditional Irish Shillelagh, Hapkido cane methods, and Filipino martial arts, this course focuses on functional techniques—not choreographed routines. You will learn how to use the natural length, leverage, and structure of the cane to create distance, disrupt attacks, control limbs, and defend against common strikes and grabs.
This is not a martial arts class. It is a reality-based defensive training designed for everyday adults.
Special emphasis will be placed on:
Maintaining distance and positioning
Defending against common grabs and strikes
Using leverage and body mechanics over strength
Practical striking methods
Adaptability for various physical abilities
Defensive applications in confined spaces
Mobility considerations for those who cannot rely on speed or running
While some techniques have contextual crossover into weapon retention scenarios (such as a long gun malfunction or grab), the core focus remains civilian personal defense.
Every effort will be made to adapt movements for students with mobility limitations. However, participants must be able to stand, pivot, and preferably step without relying on the cane for balance during active drills. If you have questions about your individual situation, please contact the instructor in advance.
Whether you are 30 or 70, athletic or mobility-limited, this course will show you how a simple walking stick can dramatically increase your defensive capability.

Important Notes on Equipment:
Avoid heavy hardwoods—you will be training with the cane all day.
Do not bring heirloom or expensive custom sticks you do not want scratched or damaged.
A birch or rattan livestock cane (available at most farm supply stores) cut to appropriate length works very well.
A simple wooden dowel rod of proper length is also acceptable.
We will be striking training targets during class.
Prerequisites
None.
This class is designed for everyday adults with little to no martial arts background. If you have prior martial arts experience, you will still benefit from learning how these principles apply specifically to cane defense.
Course Notes
This is a physical, hands-on training day. You do not need to be strong, fast, or highly athletic to be effective with a cane. Proper leverage and body mechanics will be emphasized throughout.
